Family Discussion Guide
Support helps. Food policing usually does not.
Explain the decision, not just the treatment
Tell people what health problem you are trying to improve, why the route is being considered and what questions still need answering.
Ask for specific support
- Walking together
- Keeping practical food in the house
- Childcare for appointments or exercise
- Listening without judging
- Helping watch for significant side effects if you have chosen treatment with a clinician
Set boundaries
It is reasonable to say you do not want commentary on portions, weigh-ins, clothing size or whether you have “been good”.
If surgery is being considered
Family should understand recovery, dietary stages, long-term supplements and what practical support is needed after discharge.
