What you need to know

Start with competence: appropriate training, professional registration or accreditation where relevant, and experience with your problem. Then consider fit. Be cautious about guaranteed cures, pressure to buy large packages, vague qualifications or anybody discouraging appropriate medical care.

Make it a conversation, not a test

You are allowed to ask questions, explain what matters to you and say when something is not helping. Mental-health care should be based on your needs, circumstances and appropriate clinical assessment.
