Living with pain or long-term illness can affect far more than the bit of you that hurts.

Losses can accumulate

Work, hobbies, independence, sleep, sex, social life and confidence may change. It is understandable for that to affect mood.

Mental-health support doesn't mean the physical problem isn't real

Psychological support can help people cope with the impact of illness or pain without implying symptoms are imaginary.

Tell your healthcare team about both

If physical illness is affecting your mental wellbeing, say so. Equally, new or worsening physical symptoms should receive appropriate medical assessment rather than automatically being attributed to anxiety.
