When losing the job feels personal

Need urgent help?

If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.

A job can be income, routine, status, mates, purpose and identity. Losing it can therefore feel like losing far more than a payslip.

Separate what happened from who you are

Redundancy is a business event, not a measurement of your worth. That may sound obvious while still being difficult to believe when you're the one clearing the desk.

Build structure quickly

Keep a wake time, get dressed, leave the house, schedule job-search activity and protect time where you are not job hunting. Endless refreshing of vacancies can make the entire day feel like rejection.

Deal with both sides

Get practical employment/benefits/financial advice where needed and mental-health support if the impact is becoming hard to manage.
