When things aren't right at home

If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.

The person who normally helps you carry life can sometimes be the person you're struggling with. That can make everything feel less stable.

Arguments are often about more than the argument

Money, sex, parenting, work, trust, household load, health and simply being exhausted can all sit underneath repeated conflict. Try to identify the recurring issue rather than winning tonight's version of the argument.

Talk before resentment becomes the default

Pick a calmer time. Describe what is happening and how it affects you rather than building a prosecution case. Couples counselling or relationship support can be useful before a relationship reaches crisis point.

Safety comes first

Abuse and coercive control are not ordinary relationship conflict. If you or somebody else is unsafe, use specialist domestic-abuse support and emergency services where necessary.
