Good to Talk · Life gets bloody hard · Free. Always.
When stopping work changes more than your diary
If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.
Retirement can be freedom. It can also remove routine, status, purpose and daily contact almost overnight.
Plan what you're moving towards
“Not working” is not a complete plan for the next twenty years. Think about structure, people, movement, interests, contribution and things that give the week shape.
Friendships may need more effort
Work can provide automatic social contact. Once that disappears, connection may need to become intentional.
Get help if the adjustment becomes persistent low mood
Major transitions can be difficult. If you're losing interest, withdrawing or struggling to function, speak to your GP rather than assuming retirement is simply meant to feel like this.
You're not the only one
