Sleep and mental health
If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.
A rough night can make tomorrow harder. Weeks of rough nights can make almost everything feel harder.
It can become a loop
Stress, anxiety and low mood can interfere with sleep; poor sleep can then make concentration, mood, patience and coping harder. That does not mean every sleep problem is psychological.
Start with the boring basics because they work as a foundation
Keep wake time reasonably consistent, wind down rather than working until the second you close your eyes, reduce late caffeine if it affects you, and notice whether alcohol is actually helping sleep or merely making you sleepy before disrupting the night.
Get help when it persists
Persistent insomnia, severe daytime sleepiness, loud snoring with breathing pauses, or sleep problems significantly affecting your life warrant proper assessment rather than endless experimentation.
