Move because your head matters too
Self-help is not the right tool for an emergency. If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.
Exercise is not punishment for what you ate. Movement can support physical health, sleep, routine, confidence and mental wellbeing.
Start below your ambition
If you're inactive, begin with something sustainable: walking, cycling, swimming, gardening or a short home session. The best plan is one you can repeat.
Use movement as structure and connection
A regular walk with a mate or weekly sports session gives the calendar an anchor as well as activity.
Work around health limitations properly
Injuries, symptoms and medical conditions may require adaptation or professional advice. “Exercise helps” does not mean every exercise is appropriate for every person.

Self-help can support mental wellbeing, but it is not a substitute for professional assessment or treatment when those are needed.
