Come back without making it a big announcement
Self-help is not the right tool for an emergency. If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.
The longer you've ignored messages, the more awkward replying can feel. That awkwardness can keep the isolation going.
You don't owe everyone an essay
Try: “Sorry I've been quiet. Had a bit going on. Fancy a coffee?” Most decent people do not require a board presentation.
Choose low-pressure contact
Walking, driving, watching football, doing a job together or grabbing food can feel easier than arranging a formal heart-to-heart.
Repeat before you feel fully sociable
Connection can help motivation return; you do not necessarily have to wait for motivation before reconnecting.

Self-help can support mental wellbeing, but it is not a substitute for professional assessment or treatment when those are needed.
