Make the next step embarrassingly achievable
Self-help is not the right tool for an emergency. If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.
When motivation has vanished, “transform your life” is a terrible first task.
Lower the activation energy
Five minutes outside beats a planned hour that never happens. One washed plate beats staring at the whole kitchen. A text saying “fancy a brew?” beats waiting until you feel sociable.
Use minimum and bonus
Set a minimum you can do on a rough day and a bonus if momentum arrives. Minimum: walk to the end of the road. Bonus: carry on for twenty minutes.
Track showing up
Success is completing the agreed tiny action, not suddenly feeling fantastic afterwards. Repeated evidence that you can act even when motivation is low helps rebuild momentum.

Self-help can support mental wellbeing, but it is not a substitute for professional assessment or treatment when those are needed.
