Make work smaller than your whole life
Self-help is not the right tool for an emergency. If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental-health help but it is not an emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111 and select the mental-health option.
You may not be able to change the job overnight. You can still identify where pressure is leaking into everything else.
Write the actual pressures down
Too much work? Impossible deadlines? Conflict? Constant messages? Fear about performance? No control? Different causes need different conversations.
Create an end-of-day shutdown
Write tomorrow's first tasks, close what can be closed, and define when you are next available. The brain often keeps rehearsing work because it is trying not to forget it.
Escalate structural problems
Self-care cannot solve chronic understaffing, bullying or unsafe expectations. Use management, HR, occupational health, union/professional support or employment advice where appropriate.

Self-help can support mental wellbeing, but it is not a substitute for professional assessment or treatment when those are needed.
