MEN OVER 40 · TESTOSTERONE

Testosterone and weight: do not diagnose yourself from an advert

Low energy, reduced confidence, poorer sleep and changes in body composition can have many causes. Excess weight and testosterone can be connected, but symptoms alone cannot establish testosterone deficiency. Proper history, examination and correctly timed blood testing matter.

Quick takeaways

  • Symptoms are not specific to low testosterone.
  • Obesity and sleep apnoea can be relevant.
  • Weight loss may improve levels in some men.
  • Testosterone treatment requires proper diagnosis and monitoring.

Why the relationship is complicated

Higher body fat can be associated with lower measured testosterone, while low testosterone can also affect muscle, energy and body composition. Illness, medicines, alcohol, sleep and ageing may contribute.

One untimed test or an online symptom quiz is not a reliable diagnosis.

Start with the wider health picture

Discuss persistent sexual symptoms, reduced morning erections, marked fatigue or other concerns with a GP or appropriate clinician. Sleep apnoea, diabetes risk, depression, thyroid problems and medication effects may need consideration.

Weight management can be part of improving health without pretending every symptom will disappear at a target weight.

What weight loss may do

Some men living with obesity see improved testosterone measures after meaningful weight loss. The response varies and does not prove that weight was the only issue.

Strength activity, adequate nutrition and sleep support function, but supplements marketed as testosterone boosters should not replace assessment.

Treatment is not a lifestyle accessory

Testosterone therapy has indications, risks and monitoring requirements. It is not simply an energy product or shortcut to muscle.

A qualified clinician should interpret symptoms and repeated blood results in context.
