Methodology

Shift Some Timber downloaded the ONS Explore Local Statistics CSV for “Adult obesity prevalence” on 7 September 2026. We retained all 296 lower-tier local-authority rows for 2024/25, converted values to numbers, ordered point estimates from high to low and subtracted the England estimate from each local estimate. No values were imputed, modelled or combined.

The underlying indicator is produced by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities from Sport England’s Active Lives Adult Survey. It covers adults aged 18 and over and uses self-reported height and weight adjusted for known reporting bias. Obesity is defined as BMI of 30kg/m² or more, with lower thresholds used for some ethnic groups in the source methodology.

Limitations and responsible interpretation

These are survey estimates, not a census or count of residents.
Confidence intervals should be considered before describing one area as higher or lower than another.
The data does not explain why areas differ and cannot establish causation.
Area-level results must not be used to infer an individual’s health or body size.
Boundary changes and methodology revisions can affect comparisons over time.
The analysis covers England only and should not be labelled UK-wide.
