What is this calculator for?
Walking is one of the most accessible ways to increase daily activity. A walking calorie calculator estimates how much energy you may use during a walk based on your body weight, time, pace and sometimes distance. It is useful for understanding activity in context, but the number should never become a reason to 'earn' food or punish yourself for eating.

What this result cannot tell you

The best walk is the one you actually do. Ten minutes with the dog still counts. You do not need a mountain, Lycra or a spreadsheet.
How to use the result sensibly
Use the number as a starting point. Look at the overall trend, how you feel, what is happening with your waist, movement, sleep, blood pressure and other relevant health markers. Where the result is unexpected, concerning or difficult to interpret, a qualified healthcare professional can put it into context.
Industry-standard does not mean individually perfect. These calculators use recognised methods because they are useful, not because they can define a person. Results are informational, subjective in context and open to interpretation.

Understand the result — then decide what matters
This calculator uses MET values for different walking intensities. METs are a standard way to estimate the energy cost of activity, but real calorie burn varies with pace, hills, fitness, body composition and walking efficiency.
How the calculation works
Calories ≈ MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes.
The pace options use approximate MET values. Hills, load, terrain and individual efficiency can change the real energy cost.
The health benefit is bigger than the calorie number
NHS guidance says brisk walking counts toward the recommended of moderate activity per week. Even a brisk 10-minute daily walk has health benefits and counts toward the weekly total.
How do I know whether a walk is brisk?
A practical NHS test is that you can still talk but would struggle to sing. If you can comfortably sing, the walk is likely lighter intensity.
Do not eat back the estimate automatically
Exercise calorie estimates can be wrong in either direction. If your goal is fat loss, treat walking as part of your activity plan rather than as a voucher for extra food.
Build progression without wrecking your knees
Add one variable at a time: minutes, pace, frequency or hills. If you are currently sedentary, adding 10–regularly is a real progression.
Walking plus strength beats walking alone
Walking builds aerobic activity; strength training helps preserve muscle and function. The UK guideline includes both aerobic activity and strengthening work on at least two days per week.
Common questions
Is the calorie estimate exact?
No. MET-based calculations are population estimates.
Does slow walking count?
Yes as movement; brisker walking is more likely to meet moderate-intensity criteria.
Is walking enough for health?
It is an excellent foundation, but strength work is also recommended.
