If you are weighing up Wegovy, you probably have a fairly ordinary question: can I afford this without making the rest of life harder?
That deserves a straight answer. There is no single UK private price. Your prescribed dose, the amount supplied and what the service includes all affect the bill. An introductory offer tells you little about what you will pay later.
For most blokes, this is about more than buying a pen. It might be feeling comfortable in your clothes, getting back to football or having more energy for a family day out. The budget needs to make sense alongside those reasons.
THE QUICK ANSWER
- Compare the same dose and supply period. Four weeks and a calendar month are different.
- Ask for the full bill. Include any consultation, review, delivery and membership charges that actually apply.
- Check the provider, not just the price. A lower price is not proof of a fake; a higher price is not proof of good care.
- Ask what support continues. Know who handles medicine questions and what help remains if treatment changes or stops.
Wegovy is a prescription medicine. Whether it is appropriate for you, and which dose to use, are decisions for a qualified prescriber. The NHS semaglutide guide explains the basics and the importance of using a registered pharmacy.
How much does Wegovy cost over a year?
Start with a current quote for the dose you have been prescribed. Then check how many weeks that quote covers. Private prices can change, so a dated quote is more useful than a headline range copied around the internet.
A four-week price needs 13 payments to cover 52 weeks. Multiplying it by 12 only covers 48 weeks. A calendar year is slightly longer than 52 weeks, so check your actual supply dates too.
These examples show the arithmetic. They are not current pharmacy quotes, SHIFT prices or a recommendation to take treatment for a year.
| Example price for four weeks | Four-week supplies in 52 weeks | Medication total for 52 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| £150 | 13 | £1,950 |
| £200 | 13 | £2,600 |
| £250 | 13 | £3,250 |
If your quote is genuinely per calendar month, use its monthly billing terms instead. If the dose or price changes, add the actual supplies at each price rather than applying one starter offer to the whole year.
Your first year may include different doses and periods without treatment. Ask your prescriber and provider what to expect; do not pick a dose to fit an online cost table. The UK product information sets out the dosing framework, while individual treatment decisions belong with your prescriber.
What else belongs in the budget?
Ask whether the quoted fee includes:
- the initial assessment and prescribing decision;
- follow-up reviews and a route for medicine questions;
- delivery and any charge for a replacement or missed delivery;
- tests, if your clinician says they are needed;
- a compulsory membership or subscription;
- any change in price when an introductory offer ends.
Do not add a made-up allowance for blood tests or assume every service charges extra. Ask what applies to your situation, get it in writing and compare the total on the same basis.
If the continuing cost looks difficult, say so before starting. A treatment plan needs to fit your circumstances. Do not stretch doses, share pens or change treatment to make an offer last longer; discuss affordability and alternatives with your prescriber.
Can you get Wegovy on the NHS?
Wegovy can be prescribed through the NHS when the relevant criteria and local pathway are met. NHS access is not the same as meeting a medicine's licensed eligibility criteria. Ask your GP or local weight-management service what is available and how referrals work in your area. The NHS information on semaglutide describes specialist assessment for weight management.
An NHS prescription is different from a private quote. Where an NHS prescription charge applies in England, the current standard charge is £9.90 per item, with exemptions and prepayment arrangements available. That is not a private Wegovy price or a promise of NHS access. Check the current NHS prescription-charge guidance.
You can also ask about support that does not depend on obtaining a prescription. The NHS weight-management information covers programmes, lifestyle support and treatment routes.
How do you check that an online provider is legitimate?
A convincing website and a low price are not enough. Equally, an expensive quote does not tell you how good the service is.
Before paying, get clear answers to four questions:
- Who assesses and prescribes? Get the clinician's name and professional registration details. Check those details with the relevant regulator.
- Which pharmacy supplies the medicine? Match its name and address against the appropriate pharmacy register. For a pharmacy in Great Britain, check the General Pharmaceutical Council; Northern Ireland has a separate pharmacy regulator.
- Who helps if something goes wrong? Know how to contact the prescriber, pharmacist and customer-support team, and what each can help with.
- How is the medicine delivered and stored? Ask about packaging, delays and what to do if a delivery arrives in an unexpected condition. Follow the instructions supplied with your medicine and contact the pharmacy if you are unsure.
The NHS warns that some websites sell fake weight-loss medicines. Use a registered pharmacy and a proper prescription route. Do not treat price alone as a test of authenticity.
One outdated tip still circulates: that every UK seller must display the distance-selling logo. The MHRA says that requirement ended in Great Britain in January 2021; requirements continue in Northern Ireland. Verify the actual business rather than relying on a badge.
What should useful support look like?
Before you join a service, ask what happens after the first prescription:
- How do I ask about side effects or a missed dose?
- Who decides whether my dose changes?
- When is my next review, and what does it cost?
- What happens if supply is interrupted or I need to change provider?
- What is the plan if treatment is no longer suitable or affordable?
- What support remains when treatment stops?
Clear answers matter more than a vague promise of unlimited support. A delivery update, a wellbeing check-in and a clinical review are different things. You should know which you are receiving.
Weight-management support also has to fit around normal life: meals after work, movement you can repeat, sleep, confidence and the days when motivation disappears. The NHS describes medicines alongside diet and lifestyle advice, with support after stopping.
Where SHIFT fits into the picture
SHIFT brings treatment information and practical support together around a simple question: what do you want your life back for?
Your medicine is one part of that picture. You still need dinner on a busy Wednesday. You still need a way to get moving that fits your starting point. And you deserve to notice progress beyond a single weigh-in.
| Part of SHIFT | What it helps you do |
|---|---|
| Grub | Find food ideas and make the next meal easier to plan. |
| Fit | Explore movement options that suit your circumstances. |
| My Timber | Keep your goals, check-ins and progress together. |
| Life Back | Record the everyday things you want to get back to: energy, confidence, clothes, hobbies or family life. |
| Continuity | Understand the questions and practical planning around changing or stopping treatment. |
You can explore the Programme whether you are considering treatment, already taking it elsewhere or planning your next stage. Member tools may require sign-in. Medicine decisions and clinical follow-up remain with your prescriber; a My Timber check-in is not a clinical review.
For treatment routes, use Treatments and check the current product information and availability. “No stock available today” means exactly that. Reading this guide does not reserve medication or guarantee that a prescription will be suitable.
If food thoughts are taking up more headspace after treatment changes, our food-noise guide is a useful next read. Persistent or worrying symptoms need a conversation with a healthcare professional.
Before you decide: three useful next steps
- Get one complete quote. Same dose, same supply period, all required fees included.
- Write down who does what. Prescriber, pharmacy, support contact and the next review.
- Choose one everyday goal. Something you want to do or feel more comfortable doing, alongside any weight goal.
You do not need to solve the whole year tonight. Get the facts straight, make the next decision with your eyes open and keep the reason you started in view.

Common questions
Is the cheapest Wegovy provider necessarily unsafe?
No. Compare the registered provider, clinical assessment, pharmacy, total cost and support. A low price alone does not prove a medicine is fake, and a higher price does not guarantee better care.
Does a four-week supply mean one calendar month?
No. Thirteen four-week supplies cover 52 weeks. Twelve cover 48 weeks. Check the supply period and payment schedule before comparing quotes.
Can I use my starting price to work out the full year?
Only if the same price and supply terms genuinely apply throughout. Dose changes, introductory offers and separate fees can change the total. Ask for the later prices before committing.
Do I have to buy medication through SHIFT to use its information?
No. The public Knowledge guides are there to help you understand your options. You can also explore the Programme and its membership terms if you want practical support alongside treatment obtained elsewhere or without medication.
What if I am thinking about stopping treatment?
Discuss it with your prescriber and ask about the next stage of support. SHIFT's coming-off guide can help you prepare questions and think about practical routines; it does not change your prescription.
