Pharmacy First expansion: what changes in England this autumn
What the planned expansion means for local pharmacy care, including who can provide it and what to check before travelling.
NHS England has announced additional treatment pathways at participating prescribing pharmacies from autumn 2026. Local availability matters: this is not an immediate change at every pharmacy.
What has been announced?
The 10 September announcement covers five additional pathways, including certain migraines, acne, rhinitis, outer-ear infections and skin conditions. Eligibility differs between pathways; the rhinitis pathway, for example, is for children, while the migraine pathway is for adults with low-frequency episodic migraine.
The initial rollout is limited to pharmacies that become prescribing pharmacies. A pharmacist with the appropriate prescribing qualification must be involved. NHS England’s announcement sets out the conditions and rollout limits.
Why the prescribing qualification matters
Independent prescribing allows suitably qualified pharmacists to assess patients and prescribe within the commissioned service. This builds on existing Pharmacy First arrangements, rather than making every medicine available on request. The government described the wider plans in its May 2026 pharmacy agreement.
What this means for you
For men fitting an appointment around work or family, a participating local pharmacy could provide a more convenient route for an eligible condition. Before travelling, ask whether the pharmacy offers the new prescribing service and whether its pathway covers your situation.
This announcement applies to England. It does not establish the same service in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, or introduce a new route to weight-loss prescriptions.
