The problem extends beyond a waiting list

England’s independent ADHD Taskforce published its final report in November 2025. NHS England’s response describes pressure across health, education, employment and the criminal justice system, with recommendations for more coordinated, needs-based support.

The response highlights changes to assessment models, professional training, digital tools and information. It does not announce that every recommendation has already been implemented or that an adult can now obtain an immediate assessment locally.

Separate three practical questions

For someone waiting, it helps to distinguish referral status, support for present difficulties and the eventual diagnostic assessment. Ask the referring service who currently holds the referral, how to report a change in circumstances and what help can be accessed while waiting.

For a workplace conversation, describe the tasks or conditions causing difficulty and ask what practical support can be discussed. That conversation need not begin with an argument about a national report. Equally, an online questionnaire should not be presented as a definitive diagnosis.

What would count as progress?

Our editorial test is whether a person encounters a clearer route, fewer repeated explanations and support they can actually use. A new policy document is a starting point for checking those things, not proof that they have happened.

This article covers England’s final report, bringing the earlier interim announcement into the same story. It deliberately avoids treating successive statements about the same taskforce as separate breakthroughs. Confirm the current local pathway with the service involved, particularly if an assessment or ongoing care is being transferred between providers.
