What the training is intended to improve

NHS England announced new suicide-prevention training for mental-health staff in September 2025. Available through MindEd, the course supports a person-centred approach to understanding distress, practical needs and safety.

The announcement places less emphasis on predicting what someone will do through a low, medium or high risk label. A label cannot substitute for listening to the person and making an appropriate plan with them.

What a reader can ask about their care

Our suggested questions are practical: have I understood the plan, do I know who to contact if things change, and have the concerns that matter to me been recorded? If a trusted person is involved, discuss what role you would like them to have.

These questions are not a checklist for deciding whether someone is safe. They help clarify the support being offered and what happens between appointments. A training rollout also cannot show that every professional has completed it or that an individual service has changed its practice.

Keep the route to immediate help clear

The NHS announcement directs people in England who need urgent mental-health support to NHS 111. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999. A routine appointment, a webpage or a staff-training announcement should not delay urgent help.

For the newsroom, the useful follow-up is whether services can explain their approach in language patients understand. We will not turn this policy announcement into an unsupported claim that suicide has been reduced, or use distressing personal details to make the story more attention-grabbing.
