FOR PARTNERS · HELP WITHOUT NAGGING
Someone you care about is trying to get his health back. What actually helps?
You do not need to become his coach, food police or clinician. Useful support is usually smaller and more practical.
This page is for a wife, husband, partner, family member or friend supporting a man using SHIFT or working on his weight and health.
Ask before you fix
Try: “Do you want me to listen, help you make a plan, or leave it with you for now?” It gives him some control without pretending you have the answer.
If he uses Life Back, ask what he wants his life back for rather than making every conversation about kilograms.
Practical help beats surveillance
- Agree one meal that works for everyone rather than policing what is on his plate.
- Offer company for a walk or appointment if he wants it.
- Notice everyday wins without turning the house into a weigh-in station.
- If a clinic has gone quiet, help him gather the information he already has and find the appropriate next contact.
When support needs to become healthcare
Persistent or worrying symptoms, significant side effects, distress around eating, or concerns about medication need appropriate professional help. Do not advise him to change, stop or restart prescription treatment yourself.
