Pharmacy cholesterol checks: who England’s pilot is for

What was announced
NHS England announced a pilot of cholesterol checks in around 100 pharmacies, running from autumn 2026 into spring 2027. The proposed service combines a finger-prick test with a pharmacist assessment and advice on the next step.
The announcement describes eligibility including ages 40–84, no pregnancy and no blood test in the preceding year. These are pilot rules, not a reason to assume any nearby pharmacy can provide the service. Local participation needs checking.
A quick sample still needs interpretation
The seven-minute headline concerns the test. It should not be read as a guarantee that the whole appointment, clinical interpretation and any follow-up take seven minutes. A result needs to be considered alongside the person’s wider health and existing treatment.
Our suggested questions are: what is included, who will explain the result, will my GP receive it, and who arranges follow-up if something needs attention? If you already have recent results, ask whether those can be used rather than assuming another test is needed.
Keep the pilot in perspective
The earlier pharmacy work cited by NHS England gives a rationale for testing the approach more widely. It does not prove that national delivery is complete or that every participant needs a medicine.
