A new route being evaluated
Public Health Scotland began publishing activity from Scotland’s GP walk-in pilot in July 2026. The first centre opened in Wester Hailes in February, with nine operating by the end of June and more planned.
The pilot is intended to offer same-day help for urgent primary-care concerns without an appointment. It is not a replacement for every part of a person’s usual GP care, and a target for future centres should not be counted as centres already open.
Why visit totals are not a performance ranking
Centres opened at different times, can have different hours and may serve different groups. Public Health Scotland specifically warns against direct comparisons of their activity totals. Separate evaluation is examining effectiveness, appropriateness and cost.
A busy centre may reflect local demand, access or the length of time it has been open. The number alone cannot prove that it has reduced pressure elsewhere or that one location provides better care.
