Sometimes poor mental health isn't an abstract problem. Life has happened — and it hurts.

Work, money, relationships, kids, grief, illness, loneliness, alcohol, gambling, identity and major change can all put pressure on us. This part of Good to Talk starts with the thing that's happening in your life, not a diagnosis.

When work follows you home Deadlines, responsibility, insecurity, difficult people, long hours and never properly switching off can turn a job into something that occupies your head even when you're nowhere near work. When money is permanently on your mind Bills do not disappear because somebody tells you to practise mindfulness. When things aren't right at home The person who normally helps you carry life can sometimes be the person you're struggling with. When a relationship ends Even when separation is the right decision, losing the life you thought you had can hurt like hell.Dads can struggle too Becoming a dad can be brilliant, exhausting, frightening and lonely — sometimes before breakfast. When being a parent feels relentless You can love your kids beyond words and still occasionally want five minutes where nobody says “Dad”.Grief doesn't follow a timetable There is no correct way to miss somebody. When losing the job feels personal A job can be income, routine, status, mates, purpose and identity.Looking after everyone except yourself Caring can come from love and still be exhausting. When a drink becomes the off switch A couple of drinks can feel like the quickest way to turn the volume down. When gambling stops being entertainment The damage is not only the money. When confidence follows you into the bedroom Body image, stress, relationship problems, medication, physical health and mental health can all affect sex and intimacy. When your body changes your life Living with pain or long-term illness can affect far more than the bit of you that hurts. When your body changes faster than your head Losing a lot of weight can be brilliant — and still bring feelings you weren't expecting.Everyone else's highlight reel It is remarkably easy to compare your ordinary Wednesday with somebody else's edited best bits. When stopping work changes more than your diary Retirement can be freedom.Mates matter Plenty of men have people to go for a pint with and nobody they think they can tell they're struggling.

More than one thing can be true

You can have a real practical problem and need mental-health support at the same time. Therapy cannot make a redundancy unhappen; financial advice cannot by itself treat depression. Good support recognises both.
